When Jesus opens the scroll in the temple and begins reading, he reads about why the Holy Spirit is upon him. It’s upon him for specific work. Christians are familiar with reading this in the Gospel of Luke 4:17-19
There is a list of work, works of love, that Jesus reads about and then goes about doing, and he does it all. Good thing he called people to follow him and then share in doing all the work.
Have you ever thought about what purpose God has for you?
Have you asked for a filling of the Holy Spirit?
In the book Praying Our Way Through Stress: Drawing Wisdom from the Lord’s Life and Prayer I include a song that I was inspired to write . . . it is a song asking for the Spirit to fall afresh upon me and you.
It’s a song about accepting his forgiveness, our hearts turning toward His and us becoming more Christlike.
Each of us will not do all of the works that Jesus did, and yet, he tells us we will do greater things than he. When I think about that I believe he means that we will do more together than he could do alone. One person can only do so much, even the person of God, but when all those people who are called to follow Jesus work together, they can do marvelous and many things. It’s a matter of letting the Holy Spirit fill us and guide us. I include another song in the book that asks God to break our wills and make them His, to restore our souls, to be bathed and touched and filled with the Holy Spirit.
Perhaps today you could read the passage from Luke 4:17-19 and then pray to receive the Holy Spirit to empower and equip you to do the work that God has for you to do.
Let us pray,
Lord, thank you for the life of Jesus and his works of love. Please send your Holy Spirit upon me/us so that I/we may glorify you in and through the work you have given me/us to do. Guide me/us to the place or places and to those people with whom you would have me work with and minister to. AMEN
