God came earth
to find you
to find me
to be found by you and me
this is the way
God came
to save us
this is the way
back to God
this is the way
to eternal life
Jesus is the way.
In John 14:6 Jesus calls himself the way. Some may ask, the way to what?
The first time there is a reference to the way in the Bible is in the Book of Genesis 3:24, where a cherubim and a flaming sword turning in every direction is set to guard the way to the tree of life. In Genesis 18:19 we read about Abraham being chosen to keep the way of the Lord. Now typically we would understand the way to mean a road or a path. So what happens when Jesus calls himself the way?
How many of us pause to consider this when we look upon the manger scene? How can we help others find the way to a manger scene so we may introduce them to One whom we know to be the way?
What happens when Jesus tells us he is the way is that he makes the way become a living entity. Now the way is no longer something to be walked or tred upon, but someone with whom we can be in a relationship with. Instead of having a path to follow we have a guide, we have a traveling companion, we have someone to hold onto and someone to hold onto us. We lift him up and he lifts us up.
Lord God, thank you for the gift of Jesus, for giving us the way to your heart, the way to eternal life, the way to peace. Help us to bring others into relationship with you. AMEN
