Jesus rode the colt into Jerusalem and everyone who heard about his coming laid palm branches down and shouted ‘Hosanna in the highest!”
What did they mean when they were shouting those words? When I was growing up I thought Hosanna was a praise word – I understood they were praising Jesus. When I became a student of the Word as an adult I learned that I had been wrong in my understanding of what Hosanna in the Highest meant. For years I thought the meaning of Hosanna in the Highest was Praise to God in the Highest. The entire meaning of this scene changed for me when I learned the real meaning is Get Victory! Get the Highest Victory!
Now, if you are like most people – you haven’t paid much attention to how things played out in Jerusalem. Most of us only pay attention to the last supper Jesus and his disciples had in the Upper Room and maybe the scenes recorded about what happened in the Garden of Gethsemane.
But there was so much more that happened between Jesus’ entry into Jerusalem and the Last Supper before they got to the Garden. Mark’s Gospel contains 12 teachings between Jesus’ entry into Jerusalem and his entry into the Upper Room.
Where did they take place? What were they? What were the crowds doing during this time? Well – some of the teachings took place between Jesus and his disciples and others took place among the crowds. We have the benefit in our generation to read all the teachings and to try to understand them and ponder how to apply them in our generation.
What did Jesus do next? To find out you will have to read the Scriptures or listen to them. Perhaps this week you will make a decision to do that. Maybe you’ll find 5 – 15 or 30 minutes to read and ponder . . .maybe you’ll find people to discuss them with. Perhaps you will choose to attend the special services that are held in many local churches.
Perhaps, you will allow Jesus to have victory over your own life.
Lord God, Hosanna! Get the Highest Victory over our lives that we may not be overwhelmed by the happenings and circumstances facing us in this generation. Help us to hold fast to you and your teachings in faith, help us to learn from you, and help us to fulfill your great commission and live out greatest commandments. And may all the glory and power be yours, forever and ever. AMEN
