The Gospel reading last Sunday was John 1:6-8,19-28. In the reading we learn about a man name John who was sent from God as “a witness to testify to the light, so that all might believe through him.”
Later in the reading we learn that Pharisees sent priests and Levites to find out who exactly John was.
These two ‘sendings’ are interesting to me and in some way begs us to ask a question ourselves – Who sends us to whom?
What is interesting in this passage is that everyone knows what John is doing, but they aren’t certain about who is. And the people want answers – they are going to have to go back to those who sent them and tell them who this man is. First John tells them he isn’t the Messiah, nor is he Elijah, nor is he ‘the prophet.’ Finally instead of asking John who he is, they ask, “What do you say about yourself?” John answers clearly and without hesitation.
As we prepare for Christmas we might want to take some time and ask ourselves –
Who has sent us?
What do we say about Jesus?
What do we say about ourselves?
To, it seems this reading is a reminder for us to seek our identities and our place in God’s family through Christ, who is The Light of the World.
